(Archived) Microbiologist Technician
Job Description
Summary:
The Microbiologist supports the overall function of the microbiology department by preparing specimens, analyzing samples, reporting results to clients, and carrying out laboratory procedures as directed by the Microbiology Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Performs stains, including gram and acid fast
• Reads, interprets, and enters manual Kirby-Bauer sensitivities
• Processes, reads, and interprets ova and parasite samples
• Enters ova and parasite final information into the computer system
• Reads urine and 24-hour cultures (isolates and identifies pathogens using established protocol and sterile technique)
• Performs and interprets susceptibilities
• Recognizes discrepancies in susceptibilities and performs secondary confirmation testing as needed
• Enters and releases urine culture results in the computer using established protocol
• Aliquots media for biochemical testing
• Performs all tasks as described in the Micro Laboratory Aide job description on an “as needed” basis
• Perform other duties as required
• Follows strict safety guidelines
• Provides excellent customer service to clients and internal customers
• Adheres to scheduled reporting times
• Performs other duties as required
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in a science field
• Experience using Windows-based Software
• Able to type a minimum of 50 WPM
• Experience in clinical microbiology is required
Work Environment:
• A clinical laboratory setting with noise from instrumentation and possible exposure to biohazardous samples such as blood, bodily fluids, urine and feces.
• Use of gloves, glasses and lab coats for personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Fast Paced, high productive environment, that is fun & business casual
Physical Demands:
• Ability to learn material relevant to position
• Ability to remain in stationary position for extended periods of time
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 35 pounds
• Ability to move within work space to access resources
• Ability to communicate and exchange information accurately
• Ability to perform repeated and fine motor movements of the hand and arm
• Reliable and predictable attendance is a requirement of this position
