Job Description

Zoetis seeks a talented individual with experience building laboratory data analysis tools and automation processes in support of sample logistics, primary pharmacology, and biomarker identification. This individual will prep and blend a wide variety of small and large datasets for primary analyses and further analytics by data scientists in order to increase the knowledge scientists gain from their experiments.

The successful candidate should have at least 3 years of relevant experience working with biologists to automated both their lab and data processes. Data processes include scripting automation to capture necessary information, providing processing tools, reporting for federated access, and enabling analysis solutions that provide prepping, blending, statistical, and visualization components. Lab processes include sample collection, storage, preparation, processing, testing, and data collection for small molecules, proteins, and study biospecimens. Our goal is to deliver quality results and efficient processes while minimizing procedurally-introduced artifacts. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.

Please note: This position is for a fixed term of 3.5 years.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with scientists to discuss and understand their work for business analysis purposes; help them to design data collection, analysis, and visualization approaches especially with understanding of potential artifacts and consumption of data by other groups.
  • Based on results of discussions with end users, implement solutions with:
    • data analysis/database tools including but not limited to Microsoft Excel, IDBS eWorkbook, BioRails/Morphit, Spotfire, Tableau, JMP, and relational databases.
    • programming languages including but not limited to: R, Python, JSON, SQL, Visual Studio, and JavaScript scripting language.
    • basic laboratory automation including but not limited to multimode plate readers (e.g. Perkin-Elmer Enspire, Mesoscale Discovery, Luminex, and SpectraMax readers), automated liquid handlers (e.g. for automated pipetting and/or DNA/RNA extractions), and other general lab equipment (e.g. plate washers, centrifuges, etc.).
  • Utilize tools supporting biological assays including experiment setup, primary analysis, artifact identification, and integration with sample information and other assays.
  • Utilize tools supporting Sample Logistics processes including shipping, receiving, storing, distributing, and tracking small/large molecule samples and biospecimens (blood, plasma, serum, saliva, urine, etc.) and look for ways to improve these processes.
  • Work with partner lines to define and develop solutions for data ingestion, prepping, blending and visualization across various data sources.
  • Present tools and results to scientific teams and management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Educational background: BS/MS in Biology or related field with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Excel Macro Programming, SQL.
  • Computer skills preferred: R and/or Python, JSON, Spotfire and/or Tableau, Oracle, Visual Studio, and JavaScript.
  • Automation skills preferred: programming of multimode plate readers (e.g. Perkin-Elmer Enspire, Mesoscale Discovery, Luminex, and SpectraMax readers), automated liquid handlers (Hamilton, Tecan), Agilent integrated systems, and other general lab equipment (plate washers, multidrops, etc.).
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize work and work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to communicate with data scientists, biologists, and management.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Work environment:

The placement of this position will be primarily in Kalamazoo, MI. Occasional travel to other Zoetis sites may also be requested.

The person filling this position will work predominantly in an office setting but may spend some of their time in a laboratory setting. There may be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There may be handling of, and/or exposure to animal tissue and zoonotic organisms.
