(Archived) Principal Scientist – Data Scientist

Job Description

Zoetis seeks an experienced individual to apply Data Science / Machine Learning algorithms to a wide variety of small and large biological datasets, with the aim of increasing the immunological knowledge scientists gain from their experiments. Analytics will be used to explore mechanism of action, response dynamics, biomarker discovery, and potential for companion animal and livestock disease prediction, prevention, detection and treatment continuum of care.

The successful candidate should have a PhD and relevant experience in analysis of biological systems using a variety Data Science approaches. The individual should have experience working with both biologists and data scientists, be effective at communicating biological principles, machine learning algorithm approaches, and statistics to multidisciplinary teams, and be comfortable generating a variety of visualizations of the underlying data and the analytic results. The successful candidate will have experience building shared, reusable code for reproducible analyses for multiple experiments using the same types of assays. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.

Please note: This position is for a fixed term of 3.5 years.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with biologists to continually refine biological questions and analytical needs.
  • Apply various machine learning, AI, and statistical algorithms on different data types and experimental assays.
  • Establish data standards and formats for multiple data sources throughout Zoetis to facilitate ingestion by machine learning processes.
  • Review analytic results of each algorithm and determine knowledge gained with each algorithm.
  • Present visualizations and biological knowledge gained from these results.
  • Identify cutting-edge, machine learning and statistical techniques appropriate to the analysis of Zoetis experimental data and implement them.
  • Provide reusable code for algorithms of interest to team members responsible for building automated pipelines and user interfaces.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Educational background: PhD or MS in Data Science, Biology, Immunology, Statistics or related field of math or biology.
  • Experience using Data Science / Machine Learning techniques on multiple biological data types, evaluating the most appropriate methods to apply to the task.
  • Substantive experience writing DS / ML code in either R or Python, and using code sharing tools (e.g., git)
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to communicate with data scientists, biologists, and management.
  • Ability to work quickly and independently on analyses of a variety of projects in a fast-paced, innovative environment requiring frequent project transitions.
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize work and work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Work environment:

The placement of this position will be primarily in Fort Collins, CO; however, a remote working situation may be considered. Occasional travel to R&D headquarters in Kalamazoo, MI may also be requested.
