Job Description

The R&D Product Systems Engineering & Integration team is looking for a strong Systems Engineer to join a group of 16 engineers and scientists focused on characterizing diagnostic products as they are integrated into instrument systems.  As a Product Systems Engineer, you will functionally break down, characterize, and model both assay and instrument components and processes to understand the relationship between key inputs and outputs to help develop products within an overall integrated system, ensuring that end products meet requirements and perform their intended functions. What can you expect: You will collaboratively develop and support world class diagnostic assays that provide customer satisfaction through successful implementation on our instrument platforms by optimizing and verifying performance metrics including, accuracy, precision, run success rate, as well as the time it takes our instruments to produce results, evidenced by acceptable customer satisfaction metrics. Products are developed and supported within an overall integrated system framework encompassing a complete range of sciences, engineering, manufacturing, marketing and customer support inputs to ensure end products meet requirements and perform their intended functions. The successful candidate will collaborate with different technical areas (including biochemistry, electrical/mechanical engineering, software engineering, assay development) to perform design and investigation activities with well-designed experiments and by conducting system modeling, characterizations, data analysis, simulation, designing and implementing solutions. Strong participation and collaboration in diverse project teams to support development and investigation activities by performing well-designed experiments, conducting data analysis and presenting findings. Work cross-functionally to consider full spectrum of relevant aspects of product development and design. Develop and implement novel test methods for assuring system function in nominal and marginal operating conditions. Gather internal and external data, carries out analyses and reaches conclusions.  Provide support for overall system throughout entire product development process, including consultative support and ensuring each system piece is progressing and integrated according to plan. Conceptualize and evaluate technical feasibility of new product concepts and major hardware changes to existing products.  Document experiments and other lab or production activities.  Prepares reports and summaries. Presents results and conclusions.  Maintains appropriate records. Maintain knowledge of products and procedures, developments in the field, industry and regulatory environments.  Adheres to appropriate procedures and regulatory requirements. May participate in conferences, webinars and seminars to continue to develop knowledge base. What do you need to succeed: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s or Preferably a Master’s or PhD in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry or related field EXPERIENCE: Preferably 7+ years of applicable experience. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Systems Modeling Capability to create descriptive, predictive, functional, and other models using modeling related software of your preference (R, JMP, COMSOL, Mathematica, MATLAB, MathCAD, Python, etc.). Characterizes and models systems by breaking them down into their component parts, mapping out how each function will work within the overall system to ensure products will operate to requirements and as intended. Capability to research and investigate all aspects of a product (engineering, biology and chemistry, etc.) and how they interact to provide technical and experimental recommendations to the project team. Able to gain full understanding of historic processes and models to better understand the current or new systems, and not be constrained within them. Master of using margin and applying it to understand a product’s performance: requirements vs capability, sensitivity, etc. Statistical Modeling and Communication Strong appreciation for statistical uncertainty and able to define, understand, and model probabilistic statements and conditions. Experience with analyzing data using statistical software, R or JMP highly preferred. Project Capabilities A visionary skeptic: treats their own ideas with appropriate skepticism. Takes initiative and accountability (shows ownership); focuses on task at hand; detail oriented. Working knowledge of coding preferred (LabVIEW, Lua, Python, Java, etc.). Ability to influence other groups, effective collaboration across varied disciplines. Ability to re-prioritize based on new inputs and discoveries. Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Strong judgement with ability to review all options and choose the most appropriate, with sometimes limited information. Appreciation for process without being limited by it. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present to diverse audiences. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work with exposed moving electro-mechanical parts. Work with exposed electrical power requiring proper protective equipment.
