Description: The Animal Care Technician is an experienced animal care technician, skilled in duties necessary to derive products from livestock, companion, and laboratory animals, or specially trained for highly sensitive duties. Animal care activities conducted with a strong emphasis on USDA/AAALACi Animal Welfare compliance/enhancement and GxP documentation of animal observations supporting QC and R&D testing. Duties & Responsibilities: Responsibilities also include handling, restraining, feeding, providing relevant training/enrichment and otherwise caring for Production, Quality Control, and Research animals in accordance with AAALACi Standards, USDA Regulations, Standard Operating Procedures, Standard Methods, and Outlines of Production. Assist in training other employees in an area of responsibility as assigned. Assist staff in developing new procedures and methods or improving old ones. Read and follow schedules, procedures, and documents. Follow BIAH Standard Operating Procedures, Standard Methods, and Outlines of Production Properly document work and observations performed with strict adherence to GXP documentation Prepare for incoming animals (power washing, disinfecting, facility set-up) and Pperform General Housekeeping Perform daily and study observation of animals, and reporting any abnormalities and appropriately documenting observations. Perform animal handling and restraint as required Perform animal conditioning (vaccinations, deworming, etc.) along with blood and biological sample collection, injections, etc. TakingCollect animal temperatures and other animal data. Administer treatments prescribed by the veterinarian for livestock, companion, and laboratory animals Proper operation of sterilizers, cage washers, and other equipment Proper operation of large equipment (snow removal equipment, farm machinery, fork truck, etc.) Work in adverse outdoor conditions Perform animal care and testing record keeping for animals Must be able to accurately dilute various fluids, including weighing and measuring, using the metric system Perform all aspects of equipment preparation and sterilization Demonstrated understanding of systems, equipment, and processes Demonstrated ability to set-up and troubleshoot equipment as required Must be able to perform proper GxP documentation, and proceed independently without direct supervision and assist in training of new hired technicians. Assist higher Grade operators under supervision Required to perform work of a lower classification as needed. Other duties as assigned. Requirements: At a minimum, High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, or other related area, from an accredited institution, preferred. Animal care experience, required. Must obtain AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within 12 months of hire date and AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) within 24 months of hire date Understanding of aseptic processes and properly performing functions in an aseptic manner, preferred. Knowledge of proper sanitization techniques and ability to properly perform and follow rules of these techniques, preferred. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to effective communication and that contribute to a congenial teamwork environment and collaborative problem solving Reasoning Skills Ability to use basic logic to identify and solve problems – identifies problems, recognizes symptoms, and potential causes and applies appropriate solutions Knowledge and skill to recognize creative ideas that add value and are able to be implemented to improve efficiency, effectiveness and reduce complexity for department Effective and efficient organizational, time management, and multi-tasking skills Comprehension and Application/Computer Skills Proficient reading, comprehension and application skills toward a diverse set of complicated tasks Experience with Windows Operating System Some physical exertion is required. Eligibility Requirements: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
