The Environmental Research Scientist will prepare (author) Environmental Risk Assessments for global product approval (Primarily US and EU). This role will also entail commissioning, monitoring, protocol preparation and approval of contract research at external partners to support ecotoxicity study requirements for environmental dossiers

Functioning as project team member for innovation/development project teams representing environmental safety needs

Serving as corporate expert for environmental issues related to product exposure and use.

Responsibilities:

  • Compilation and initiation of international study programs to assess the environmental safety of veterinary drug candidates considering regulatory guidelines and project requirements
  • Independent and self-responsible planning and initiation of external (contracted) ecotoxicity studies (in vitro/in vivo) of veterinary drugs during development up to approval and during market phase: design of GxP studies, timing, monitoring, CRO selection and contracting, budget allocation and control
  • Independent authoring and editing of study protocols, study reports and resulting regulatory documents; evaluation of the studies, ecotoxicological assessment of the results, creation of graphics and presentations and drafting of environmental risk assessment (ERA) and effective communication of outcomes with Project Teams and leadership
  • Assessment of study information and its relevance to development projects and products on the market taking into account the project objectives, benefit/risk ratio concerning environment and product safety
  • Representation of the Team/department in international project teams and - where required within the projects – leading of cross-functional global teams working on specific tasks concerning environmental issues and environmental safety
  • Independent and self-responsible representation of the Team/department in decision-making bodies and, respectively, Elanco Animal Health with regulatory authorities, in scientific working groups (national, international), international regulatory working groups (e.g. VICH), international industry working groups (e.g. PIE, AIE), at partner companies, and in in-licensing/out-licensing initiatives; global scientific network activities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within the Non-clinical Development Team and across various Project Teams

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD or master’s degree (environmental science, environmental toxicology, biology, biochemistry, analytical residue chemistry, ecology, or other relevant scientific discipline)
  • Experience in aquatic and/or terrestrial ecology and conduct of environmental toxicity studies

Other preferences:

  • High level of experience in the field of environmental safety (including terrestrial/aquatic toxicity testing, and environmental fate and chemistry studies); ideally experiences in working in international scientific and/or regulatory working groups and industry associations
  • In-depth knowledge of various computer programs, such as word processing and presentation programs, graphics/statistics, tools for literature searches
  • High level of experience in project work in the veterinary pharmaceutical industry; ability to effectively work in teams under changing workloads
  • Ability to successfully perform different and diverse tasks in a reasonable time and to maintain oversight in this cross-functional complexity to meet priorities
  • Experiences in leading cross-functional global teams working on specific tasks
  • Ability to constructively question the status quo, to initiate/take on changes, to accompany them and to establish them successfully
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English
  • Work location may vary and remote work (telework) is possible. Salary and job title dependent on experience
