This role is based on-site at our Ridgefield, CT location with hybrid flexibility of 2-3 days per week on-site.

This leadership position creates and sets the overall Patient Experience and Advocacy (PE&A) strategy for all TAs (Cardio-Renal-Metabolic, ILD-Respiratory, Immunology, Oncology and Mental Health. and is accountable for the execution of strategies and programs that support the company’s strategic objectives and overall therapeutic area goals across the three teams - Patient Experience Design (PED), Patient Connection & Culture (PCC), and Patient Advocacy & Professional Relations (PAR).

The Executive Director, Patient Experience & Advocacy is responsible for overseeing the Director of Patient Advocacy and all policy-related discussions across Boehringer. This role is accountable for ensuring BI's executive Leadership are aware of significant policy matters and issues at an industry level and incorporating the voice of PA in BI’s policies.

This leader is responsible for translating the Patient Excellence vision and mission set by the Vice President across the Experience & Advocacy teams. The incumbent will be accountable for cross-functional collaboration in all matters related to patient experience, advocacy, and professional organization engagement.
The position holder is also responsible for setting the vision and strategy to enable a Patient-centric culture across the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Translates the vision and mission of the Patient Excellence leadership onto the PE&A teams.
  • Supports prioritization of patient experience, culture, and advocacy objectives within PE&A teams to ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Sets the vision for Patient Experience design alongside the PED Directors across all TAs.
  • Ensures alignment with US cross-functional teams as well as global leadership.
  • Keeps up to date with patient experience and advocacy strategies from competing firms and ensures Boehringer Ingelheim's position as one of the leading authorities of Patient Experience in the industry.
  • Advocates for the importance of Patient Experience across the patient's end-to-end journey within Boehringer.
  • Sets the vision for Boehringer's Advocacy strategy across TAs.
  • Accountable for developing, prioritizing, and maintaining relationships with the Advocacy teams, along with patient and professional medical organizations to ensure strategic, patient-centric initiatives in support of priority TAs, from early asset through commercialization.
  • Advances BI’s Patient Experience and Patient Advocacy capacity and capabilities.
  • Advocates for a Patient-centric culture across the organization and collaborates with cross-functional executive leadership to ensure activation of patient-centric culture.
  • Defines and leads the strategy for Boehringer processes and culture support gaining patient input early, often and throughout drug development; drives cross collaboration with Research, Development and Clinical/Human Pharma Operations.
  • Accountable patient-centric assets across the Boehringer (e.g., PACE portal).
  • Accountable for oversight and guidance on internal patient-centric initiatives and programs (e.g., Patient Ambassador Program).
  • Accountable for the implementation and refinement of the Patient the Insights hub with corporate partners to drive the patient centric focus across the organization cutting across Therapeutic areas.
  • Serves as BIPI’s primary internal point of contact for patient-related matters and in partnership with the Patient Connection and Culture team, ensures effective implementation of the Patient strategy across the Company and how it supports a patient-centric culture.
  • Accountable for ensuring that end-to-end patient experience design gets incorporated into patient support strategies across fulfillment, onboarding, and adherence, etc. with the Patient Support Solutions domain leaders.
  • Ensures that the patient journey insights generated by the Experience Design team are implemented across the organization, and KPIs are established and tracked to monitor success of tactics.
  • Oversees the roll-out and implementation of the PE strategy and ensures adoption across BIPI.
  • Ensures external best practice for engagement with Patient Advocacy organizations.
  • Serves as an internal resource as appropriate and identifies opportunities to maximize value of investment in current and potential programs.
  • Ensures early adoption of Patient Experience best practices in the drug development process by identifying and encouraging cross-business collaborations including Early Asset/TA/Asset teams, Research, Development and/or Clinical Operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s Degree preferred, Marketing experience, PE training and/or certification in patient insights a plus.
  • Twelve-plus (12+) years of relevant business experience required, seven-plus (7+) years of experience in Patient Services and Reimbursement, Market Access, Patient Advocacy & Engagement and driving culture change.
  • Deep understanding of the variable end-to-end patient journey, pre-launch to development value/access solutions and product usage (symptomatic, Dx, Rx, reimbursement, Tx, adherence/persistence).
  • Proven track record of developing, shaping, and optimizing the patient and HCP experience.
  • Strong understanding of the health care industry trends and directions and impacts and implications on the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills, including the ability to communicate recommendations convincingly (written, oral, presentation).
  • Business experience/acumen with demonstrated planning, implementation, creativity, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Experience working with internal cross-functional partner including PAGs, Medical/Clinical Development. Market Access Marketing, etc.
  • Experience collaborating with external patient journey stakeholders (patients, caregivers, HCPs, APPs, SPs, Payers).
  • Requirement to maintain strong disease management product knowledge of entire Boehringer Ingelheim portfolio.
  • Strong analytical skills, experience developing strategic vision and transforming vision into an operational model.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to and implements the long-term roadmap for patient experiences and patient advocacy for Boehringer Ingelheim.
  • Oversees PAE budget and monitors expenditures, revising spending, as needed.
  • Oversees departmental financial tracking system as required.
  • Provides periodic reports and analyses to leadership and team members, as needed.
  • Leads the PA&E team across all TAs with initiative-taking skilled qualified professionals.
  • Coaches and develops people and supports learning opportunities.
  • Drives Performance management for all personnel.

Compensation Data:

This position offers a base salary typically between $184,000 and $325,000.  The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance based bonus and or other compensation elements.
