(Archived) Animal Behavior Technician

Job Description

This position is responsible for providing animal behavior technician support in a research environment at the Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD) Richland and Kalamazoo site. Primary species of responsibility will be feline but may include canines or other species. Must properly use and maintain all necessary equipment and follow proper techniques as determined by departmental SOPs and Institutional Policies.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Works closely with boarded veterinary behaviorist (DACVB) to implement training and behavior modification plans.

Assists in development and supports policies and SOPs to enhance feline welfare.

Provides training in low stress handling and animal training techniques.

May perform a variety of animal activities including but not limited to: animal husbandry; animal treatments, biological sample collection and data collection, assisting clinical veterinarians with veterinary care.

Documents and maintains records utilizing computer systems and electronic medical records.

Carries out duties according to protocol and applicable SOPs.

Provides communication with and assistance to the lead technicians, manager and researchers.

Completes a variety of assignments, identifies and implements process improvements, and shares knowledge and expertise with others in work group.

Qualifications:

High School plus 3 years related experience or education combined and/or valid veterinary technician license/certification.

Flexibility, enthusiasm and adaptability within the work environment, and a track record of successfully working in a fast-paced setting involving multiple projects and tasks

Desirable attributes:

Experience handling cats in a veterinary, research, or training settling.

Previous experience working with behavior modification and positive reinforcement training.

Demonstrated knowledge of the scientific principles of training

VTS (behavior) or Relevant training certification (Karen Pryor Certified Dog Trainer, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, IAABC, etc.)

Certification in Low Stress Handling or Fear Free™
