Job Description

A great opportunity to be part of the Zoetis Incubator of Northern Colorado (ZINC) at Colorado State University! The Zoetis Incubator is seeking an experienced, responsible and highly motivated lab animal technician.

The successful candidate should have relevant experience working with laboratory animals that include mouse handling, performing inoculations, anesthesia, euthanasia and necropsies as well as tissue harvesting and processing. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.

The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to develop advanced animal handling skills, learn additional analytical techniques (CBCs, qRT-PCR, ELISAs, etc.) and will be part of a collaborative and engaging environment.

Please note: This position is for a fixed term of 3.5 years.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with mouse studies, including inoculations, monitoring, anesthesia administration, euthanasia and necropsies. Monitoring of animals may require occasionally being on-site early in the morning (6-7 am) and late in the evening (8-10 pm).

  • Tissue processing, handling and preparation for different downstream assays.

  • Following SOPs and protocols.

  • Generating and maintaining records such as study logs, supply inventory, equipment maintenance logs, scheduling logs, etc.

  • Ensure that the necessary supplies and reagents are available for conducting animal studies.

  • Adherence to institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) protocols and regulations to ensure animal wellness

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Educational background: BS (animal sciences, veterinary technology, zoology, animal sciences, microbiology or related field).
  • Ability to handle mice appropriately, including performing inoculations, euthanasia and administering anesthesia.
  • Ability to perform sample collection (e.g. blood) and necropsies.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

Work environment: The person filling this position will work predominantly in a laboratory setting. There may be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There may be handling of, and/or exposure to animal tissue and zoonotic organisms.
