Position Description

Performs bio-analytical methods (immunological, in vivo, microbiological) for various Bio QC tests on raw materials, in-process, release, or stability samples in compliance with 9CFR, EU (European Union) and VICH (Veterinary International Conference on Harmonization) regulatory guidelines, Outlines of Production and Special Outlines. Initiates, executes, and completes assays as per approved procedures and within Quality and Compliance guidelines and communicates testing, compliance and/or scheduling issues to supervisors. This includes vaccination, bleeding and challenging of approximately 8 different species of animals.

Functions, Duties, Task

Knowledge of basic scientific principles and techniques. Performs work following applicable methods and procedures with moderate supervision. Good understanding of operations in immediate area and basic understanding of applicable regulatory requirements. Makes routine decisions within the scope of responsibilities with guidance. Ability to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, and appropriate manner. Documents results and data clearly and accurately. Effectively interacts with co-workers and others as needed. Demonstrates teamwork within own group and other internal groups.

  • Conduct animal potency and safety tests on large, small and laboratory animals such as: mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs, cattle, and swine

  • Testing includes animal handling, observation, vaccination, challenges, and blood collection.

  • Perform potency assays with live bacterial and viral challenges such as Leptospira and Rabies.

  • Maintains laboratory reagents, supplies and calibrated equipment

  • Prepare reagents and materials

  • Conduct Leptospira agglutination, and identification assays; Calculates results

  • Communicates schedule, test status and concerns

  • Completes Laboratory Investigations Reports in Veeva

  • Review test sheets for completeness

  • Revise any Standard Methods and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures)

  • Assist on training others on methods & procedures.

  • Follow appropriate GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) documentation

  • Creates deviations and summary reports

  • Preforms /assist with all work associated with purchase of animals (PO Accusations, Cage Labels, Paperwork, Database entries)

  • Creates/Updates Animal Care and Use Protocols (ACUP’S)

  • Coordinates in assay/reagent validations

  • Creation of change controls

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in a relevant scientific discipline required and 2-3 years of relevant experience preferred. Work experience in USDA or regulated animal industry is beneficial.

  • A minimum of thorough understanding of small and large animal husbandry and handling, animal vaccination and bleeding, bacterial culture maintenance, serological assays, IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) ACUP (Animal Care and Use Protocol) submissions.

  • Other Information: Frequently performs routine lab tests. Highly regulated industry. Significant documentation requirements.
