Senior Scientist – Virology, Immunology, Vaccinology

Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research and Development (VMRD), Swine Biologicals group in Kalamazoo, MI is seeking a senior scientist to work in a collaborative effort across multiple Zoetis departments to investigate basic mechanisms of vaccine efficacy and safety.

Position summary

The VMRD, Swine Biologicals group conducts basic and applied research to support development of safe and effective vaccines for the global swine industry. We are recruiting a highly motivated senior scientist to investigate the immune responses of pigs to infection with Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus and to investigate immunological and physiological mechanisms impacting vaccine safety in swine.

Position responsibilities

Review, interpret and apply relevant literature applicable to the research goal.

Develop specific, testable hypotheses to understand the immunological and physiological mechanisms of acute, systemic reactions to vaccines and parenteral, large molecule therapeutics in swine.

Develop ex vivo and in vitro assays for mediators of systemic immune reactions, including proinflammatory cytokines, products of mast cell degranulation and lipid mediators of cellular signaling.

Develop methods to isolate and characterize populations of porcine cells by physical and immunological methods, including flow cytometry.

Develop methods to characterize immune complex formation and function, in vivo and in vitro, and to measure binding to appropriate cellular receptors (FcR).

Develop assays and methods to characterize antibodies produced by individual swine B-cells.

Develop assays and methods for identifying neutralizing epitopes in PRRSV and other swine pathogens.

Develop concepts for new vaccines and biotherapeutics for the control of PRRS and other swine diseases.

Work across functional groups to obtain and deploy Zoetis expertise required to further the research goals

Direct and mentor other scientists in developing laboratory skills, including immunological assays.

Prepare internal and external presentations and publications as appropriate to support organizational and personal goals.

Preferred Experience

The successful candidate should have experience in conducting hypothesis-based research in both in vitro and in vivo models. Experience with swine in a clinical or research setting.

Expertise in cytokine assays, for example: ELISA, ELISpot, Luminex, MSD or other cytokine quantification assays

Experience in maintenance of and experimentation with primary cells and cell lines, including sterile cell culture techniques.

Experience in vertebrate virology, including propagation in cell culture and titration from clinical samples using cell culture methods and RT-qPCR.

Experience with protein purification and analysis, including immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, biotinylation and other protein labeling methods

Knowledge and interest in flow cytometric methods including phenotyping immune cells and conducting functional assays

One or more years of post-doctoral research experience, in an industrial/commercial setting, preferably in animal health or agriculture-related companies

Minimum Qualifications

DVM/MS or PhD in virology or immunology or closely related field, with 2-3 years relevant research experience.

Experience in the animal health industry is desired.
