Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Livestock Therapeutics Research group is seeking a talented, versatile and highly motivated Postdoctoral scientist with expertise in gastrointestinal physiology, development and health to contribute to our research efforts in Global Therapeutics at Zoetis. The Livestock Therapeutics Research group identifies, validates, and delivers novel discoveries for, and a mechanistic understanding of, livestock growth optimization, wellness and reproductive performance. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in gastrointestinal biology and will contribute to all phases of the therapeutic discovery process for livestock species. The ideal candidate will have relevant, hypothesis-driven research experience focused on gastrointestinal biology of livestock species and demonstrated ability to establish in vitro phenotypic model systems for target validation and substrate screening. This is a laboratory position that requires expertise in cell and tissue culture, cellular biology, molecular biology and functional genomics techniques. Knowledge of and/or interest in systems biology, developmental programming, epigenetics, and genetics is a plus. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Generate novel hypotheses related to gastrointestinal health improvement in cattle and swine, and design appropriate screening strategies to interrogate and validate targets from relevant cellular pathways
  • Apply systems biology approaches to better understand the role and performance impact of the gastrointestinal tract from the molecular to whole organism level
  • Hands-on development of in vitro translational models using cellular and molecular biology techniques that lead to desired phenotypic outcomes in vivo, validated therapeutic targets, and potential biomarkers
  • Establish and support primary and stable cell cultures
  • Collaborate across multiple scientific disciplines and on multifunctional project teams
  • Effectively disseminate research results to scientific teams and management

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Educational background: DVM/PhD, DVM/MS, or PhD in animal science, cell biology, pharmacology or closely related field, with 0-3 years relevant research experience or DVM with 2-4 years of relevant, independent research experience
  • Working knowledge of the cellular mechanisms of nutrition/metabolism and of gastrointestinal physiology and development of monogastrics and ruminants
  • Extensive hands-on experience in the establishment of in vitro cellular models of disease, molecular in vitro tests, cell biology and biomarker assays
  • Direct experience using systems biology approaches for understanding complex phenotypes and for the identification of new molecular targets
  • Self-starter with ability to prioritize activities and work independently and efficiently
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint
  • Computer skills desired: Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, Pathway Studio or other relevant platforms

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Work environment: The person filling this position will work in a research laboratory. There may be exposure to chemicals and animal pathogens. There may be handling of animal tissues, and/or exposure to, zoonotic organisms
