Job Description

Zoetis is seeking a talented and experienced protein biochemist to assist at the bench with protein purification and analytical characterization, contributing to research in Global Therapeutics Research at Zoetis. This individual will partner with project teams to plan and perform protein chemistry activities including protein purification using a variety of techniques, SDS-PAGE analysis, analytical SEC, buffer preparation, protein quantitation, and dialysis.

The successful candidate should have knowledge of antibodies and/or protein interactions and the biochemical properties therein. Excellent communication, teamwork, organizational and interpersonal skills are essential. Some travel required.

Please note: This position is for a fixed term of 3.5 years.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Protein purification (mAbs, therapeutic proteins, reagent proteins) by affinity or native methods
  • Use and troubleshoot the AKTA suite of purification instruments
  • Analytical characterization of proteins by SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, CGE and analytical SEC
  • Protein binding experiments using ELISA and/or BLI
  • Quantitate proteins by UV and BCA assay
  • Dialyze and concentrate proteins
  • Sterile filtration and vialing
  • Perform high-throughput sample testing in an organized and timely manner
  • Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks, prepare precise technical report summaries, analysis and maintain appropriate documentation
  • Self-motivation, excellent communication, attention to detail, organizational and problem-solving skills, and an ability to work independently are essential
  • Work closely with team leads to identify potential therapeutic substrate
  • Directly communicate with external partners for collaborations and outsourcing

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Educational background: Minimum: Bachelor’s degree/MS or equivalent in scientific discipline with emphasis in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, engineering or related disciplines with 1-3 years of hands on experience
  • Training and experience with protein purification techniques and instrumentation a plus (AKTA Unicorn suite, KingFisher, Tecan, and HPLC)
  • Working knowledge of and/or skills in protein characterization (SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, SEC, CGE, protein quantitation, buffer preparation)
  • Experience with ELISA and BLI for characterization of protein-protein interactions
  • Ability to perform basic dilution and stoichiometric calculations
  • Ability to think critically and relate assay results to biophysical/biochemical protein properties
  • Ability to work independently with ambiguity and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize work and work efficiently, design experiments with minimal supervision, and able work across teams remotely and face-to-face.
  • Experience interacting with CROs or external partnerships
  • Excellent verbal/written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, BLAST, Vector NTI or equivalent

Work environment:

The placement of this position will be primarily in Kalamazoo, MI and is a lab-based position.

The person filling this position will work in a laboratory setting. There may be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There may be handling of, and/or exposure to animal tissue and zoonotic organisms
