Senior Scientist - Laboratory Job Description

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for maintaining compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements for animal nutrition studies.

Essential Functions:

  1. Knowledge of and compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and all procedures and protocols in the Nestlé Purina PTC PetCare Manual, QMS, and GLP.

  2. Reviewing and maintaining protocols for IACUC requirements. Coordinate protocol submission and review by IACUC.

  3. Manage electronic study set up and ensure compliance to protocols. Assist scientists and other groups in protocol development and study design as requested.

  4. Review and validate study data at completion of Petcare trials. Provide reports to Project Leaders upon request. Review health information of pets on trial and alert veterinary staff for follow up.

  5. Liaise with scientists to setup new technologies within the PetCare Center, including but not limited to, ensuring compliance to all Nestlé safety requirements, coordinating among teams to ensure proper use and trainings, and develop and maintain standard operating procedures.

  6. Present to tour groups, internal employees, and other visitors about Nutrition Trial Management.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct animal handling training sessions with Scientists

  • Assist veterinary and PetCare staff with study sample collection and procedures as needed

  • Data acquisition/summary for PetCare Animal Care and Use Committee and USDA APHIS inspections

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Knowledge):

  • M.S. in Animal Sciences, Biology, or related discipline

  • Five years laboratory animal research experience

  • Ability to work well independently and in a team

  • Good interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), organization, and math skills

  • Proficiency with computer programs (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Demonstrated high level of initiative and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and performance

Specialized Knowledge/Skills Preferred but not Required:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or PhD in Nutrition, Biology, or related field

  • Perform veterinary tasks per study protocol requirements. Serve as liaison with veterinary team on health of pets used on nutritional tests.
