Fermentation Microbiologist

The Fermentation Microbiologist will advise, mentor and coach team members in the areas of fermentation, microbiology and related manufacturing processes to lead process efficiency and sustainability projects while ensuring food safety, optimizing yields, and innovating the product portfolio to meet customer needs. In this role, you will strengthen the performance of feed manufacturing as you provide direct contribution of technical knowledge and support for projects and problems related to fermentation and lyophilization production processes.


Conceive, plan, and execute technical projects in the areas of fermentation, microbiology, and upstream processing.

Develop strategies to improve the overall reliability and productivity of fermentation processes.

Develop scale-up/scale-down models of fermentation processes.

Determine root-causes of process variation and identify process trends to increase efficiency.

Effectively organize, interpret, and present data to peers, cross functional teams, senior leadership, and colleagues.

Conduct review of literature and make recommendations for application of new technologies to improve current processes.

Preparation of upstream technology transfer documents (work instructions, batch records, etc...).

Perform other related duties as required and/or assigned. Lead team in efforts to increase production efficiency and product yields, thermostability and shelf-life of lyophilized bacteria.

Mitigate risks associated with critical control points.

Communicate with commercial team members to innovate and update current product line based on market trends and customer needs.

Supporting the Bioreactor & Fermentation Development team in the set-up, operation, and associated analysis of microbial bioreactor processes

General operations such as bioreactor building/sterilization, cleanup, and turnover of bioreactors to maintain a set run schedule

Manufacturing sampling including cell count and in-process data collection

Collaborate with multiple areas to execute data mining efforts in support of long-term project management

Identification of microorganisms

Maintain records and test results following good manufacturing practices (GMP)

Work independently and efficiently

Document work clearly and perform procedures accurately

Communicate effectively with staff members

Performs housekeeping to ensure a clean and safe working environment.

Anticipates needs and identifies opportunities for improvement.

Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as needed.

Complies with safety procedures including lock-out tag-out.


The Ideal Candidate would possess:

Strong computer, scientific, and organizational skills

Excellent communication (oral and written) and attention to detail

Ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude

Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies

At least 5 years related laboratory experience including aseptic technique, microbial identification, contamination troubleshooting, bioreactor/fermentation operations, and manufacturing of lyophilized bacteria.

2+ years of management experience.

Experience using formulas and linking spreadsheets in Excel

Prior statistical analysis experience

Master's degree in Microbiology or related degree

Work will include periodic evening and/or early morning weekday hours as well as periodic weekend hours

Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship

Candidate must be vaccinated against COVID-19
