Position Summary

The Global Animal Welfare Compliance IACUC Specialist is responsible for supporting the VMRD mission by providing IACUC and training support to the animal care and use program. He/she will assist the Global Animal Welfare Compliance Lead in optimizing the management of the large complex regulatory requirements to deliver animal care and welfare, support in vivo experimentation, and harmonize efficient business practices.

Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include one or more of the following: As the IACUC Specialist provide pre-review consultation to Principal Investigators on Animal Use Protocol (AUP) preparation to enable AUPs to reach Tier 1 review in a more approvable format. Provide back-up support to the Animal Procurement Specialist. Provide IACUC administrative support for the semiannual facility inspections and assist with support for the semiannual program review. Provide support to the VMRD Animal Welfare Training Program and record system. Assist in the evaluation of training needs and development of new training programs to address these needs. Act as an internal advocate for responsible in vivo experimentation by identifying opportunities to provide positive feedback on how animal work has enhanced the VMRD mission (e.g., during IACUC meetings or ARS department meetings). Oversee activities related to Post-Approval Monitoring (PAM) program. Provide Animal User, New Colleague Orientation and ELEMENTS, or comparable system, training as needed. Assist with identifying continuing education and training opportunities for IACUC members. Prepare the USDA Annual Report for the Kalamazoo site.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requirements

Bachelor’s and or Master’s degree in a scientific discipline with at least 10 years of experience in a regulatory and compliance field. At least 10 years of experience working with IACUC along with comprehensive knowledge of business, scientific, technical, social and/or leadership principles, theory, practices, precedents and techniques.

Preferred: CPIA credential. (Certified Professional IACUC Administrator).
